thelamestallion Love to see Mark continuing developing on "A Son's" qualities. This whole album feels more hopeful and more modest, although less conceptual.
"A Son" for me was a heartbreaking experience. It feels like it had a bigger distance to hope than "The Patience Fader" has. "A Son's" chords were as if on the verge of breaking. It felt like it (the narrator maybe) was overwhelmed by the path it had to cover.
Here chords are closer, they sound warmer, more intimate

AB Took me time to catch up and better understand this record. Definitely the right thing to do, to take your time.... Like we used to do before everything was a "click" away eh? This is the soundtrack to 2022. Equal parts hope and loss. Tape hiss to serenade us and high tone guitar, life looped, sitting all pretty on top. Adam Kocher This is a beautiful recording. The title points to exactly what is happening here……patience. The world needs more patient guitar players and more patient songs that explore quiet, yet cinematic, gorgeous chord progressions, and melody…..like these do. This is a slow drive on the back roads of the Midwest.

The glacial distillation of Mark Nelson’s “romantic minimalism” achieves unique fruition on his latest Kranky collection, The Patience Fader. A suite of solo guitar instrumentals accented with lap steel, harmonica, and twilit atmospherics, the strings smear and sparkle in elegant, windswept swells, a guitar mode once described by Brian Eno as “Duane Eddy playing Erik Satie.” These are elegies as much as songs, lulling and lilting in private currents of beauty and bereavement. Nelson speaks of the notion of “lighthouse music,” radiance cast from a stable vantage point, sending “a signal to help others through rocks and dangerous currents.”

Composed during the highly isolated summer of 2020, the pieces took shape as meditations on “roots and mourning, trying to connect with those deep hidden rivers that lead to a greater communality.” There’s something ageless, scarred, and American about this music, both displaced and devotional, the ghost of rust belts and dust bowls looming in a horizon of deepening dusk.

This album captures my mind and soul so powerfully I'm left numb, speechless, tears welling in my eyes. It's as if the ghosts of my grandparents just appeared before me to say "I love you" one last time.
